Inside OLX: The referral that started with a real conversation

How two college friends became colleagues and what their story says about choosing where to work.

When Patryk Wawrzkowicz started thinking about his next move, he didn’t open LinkedIn.

He called a friend.

Dawid Węgrzyn, now a Mobile Engineer at OLX, didn’t try to sell him on the company. He didn’t send a polished pitch or a job ad. He simply shared what working at OLX is actually like: the pace, the responsibility, the opportunities, and the pressure that comes with them. That conversation was enough.

Today, Patryk is a Junior Software Engineer at OLX, and Dawid has referred two people to the company – both thriving

Dawid joined OLX as a Junior and quickly progressed to Mid-level. What stood out to him was the level of responsibility and support for growth.

“When I heard Patryk was looking for something more challenging, I thought OLX could be a good fit,” he says. “But a referral only works if you’re honest.”

 

Honesty over hype

“I told him things move fast here,” Dawid explains. “You get real responsibility early on. There’s a lot to learn and the pace can be intense.”

For Patryk, that honesty mattered more than any job description.

“When someone you trust tells you how things really are, and you’ve seen their growth yourself, it carries weight,” he says. “There was no sugarcoating. That’s what convinced me.”

The reality lived up to the conversation. “I knew what I was signing up for,” Patryk says. “Nothing came as a shock.”

What did surprise him? “The people. That’s been one of the best parts.”

 

Why referrals work

Dawid believes strong referrals come down to two things: knowing the person and being honest.

“Recommend thoughtfully and give people the full picture,” he says. Patryk agrees: “Ask real questions. That’s the whole value of having someone on the inside.”
